July 12th - 13th weekend tournament

Last weekend was full of action, as besides the weekly league we even had a small weekend tournament in the IBA.

The 8 participants were playing in two 4-4 people group in the preliminaries. Everybody played everybody, which means every participants played 3 games, and the best 2 from every group got into the semifinal.

From the A group Jonathan and Alexa, from the B group our guest Kang Hwan-kuk, and one of our new students, Ron Lavi got into the semifinals.

Unfortunately Mr. Kang Hwan-Kuk couldn't play in the semifinals the second day, so as you can see in the pairing Alexa got into the finals by default. Jonathan lost to Ron, so the final match was beetween Ron Lavi and Alexandra Urban.

This time, Alexa won by resignation, so she won the tournament. But who will win next weekend?

July 7th - 13th league

Last week a new, weekly league system was introduced in the IBA. We decided to make a weekly league in order to encourage students to play more serious games with each other. As some of our students were abroad last week, all the students played in one league.

Everybody had to play exactly 2 games with each other. The league was a success, as nearly all the games were played. You can see the results below. The people whose name is bold were playing in the league. (The teacher Lee So-yong, and a special student Lee Byeong-Chun who only comes once a week weren't playing in the league.)

We decided to keep the weekly league system, however we will make some modifications with it next week, as we will have some new students arriving Tuesday, and Wednesday.

June League Results

On 1st of July, the June league ended and the new, July league started. This time the players of both the A and B league were very active, so everybody played many league games with each other.

Both league's winners this month were newcomers, J.S. (5d) and Pascal Hitziger (2k), who played numerous games this month. Congratulations for both of them! Pascal showed an especially good result: he didn't only win the B league, but also improved one stone, next month he is playing as 1k.

Hopefully next month there will be even more games played, as we will have many new students around the beginning and the middle of July.

May League results

Dear Readers,

on 3-th of June, the May league ended and the June league started. Even though this was only the first monthly league, more than 50 games were played. Hopefully next month this number will rise even more.

The B league is a handicap league, with moving handicap. The winner always gets 3 points, and to honorate the people who play a lot, the loser also gets one point.

The tournament was won by Matthew Harding (2k), with Anthony Daniel Adria (1k) taking the second place with just 2 points less then Matt. Unfortunately professor Lee Ki-bong (8d) could only get third place this time. Congratulations!

You can see the B league results below.

On 21th of April 2008 Diana Koszegi (1p) played her first professional game against Kim Tokkyu (8p) in the Korean Go Association's building. She was black, and by killing a big white group she managed to make her opponent resign in only 145 moves. We publish the game record now, and hopefully soon the comments as well.
